Representative McHenry needs your support!

Each summer our 10th District representative in DC comes to Asheville and holds a Town Hall meeting. Each summer he experiences the full brunt of a targeted effort to make the experience as unpleasant, antagonistic and non-productive as possible.

He needs our help! We need Buncombe’s Republicans to join the event and help counter the 25 to 1 ratio he typically faces in Asheville’s Town Hall.

You may remember our Republican fans from last year. We’ll have them this year along with our volunteer buttons and other ways to identify ourselves as conservatives and Republicans supporting our elected Republican representative. His courage him coming each year regardless of the intentional antagonism merits support.

Here’s the details. Please make an effort to come!

-from the office of Congressman Patrick McHenry-

Please share this with your conservative friends – let’s not surrender the floor to Brand-X!

Working men – and women – are walking toward the Republican Party!

From the chair – Don’t look now, but Brand-X just got some bad news. After years of exploiting America’s middle-class blue-collar workers, these important folks are saying “enough” and stepping decisively toward the Republican Party.

That’s exciting news and we can thank the President and his Republican team – including volunteers, elected leadership, and party officials – for creating the movement and momentum that’s made it happen. In fact, this is so special we might want to ponder why it happened so that we can work together to keep it happening.

Courtesy of the Wall Street Journal, let’s look at a few facts supporting this conservative political shift.

After the 1992 election, 15 of the 20 manufacturing intensive Congressional districts in America were represented by Democrats. Today, all 20 are served by Republicans.

In i992 there were 860 counties in America with 25% of workers employed in manufacturing. Bill Clinton won half of those counties. In 2016 there were only 320 counties meeting that criteria and Trump won 95% of those counties.

In 1992, manufacturing jobs accounted for roughly 16% of all jobs in America – now we’re down to roughly 8%. Most of that loss occurred under policies pressed by the Democrat Party. People – especially people who lost their jobs – remember.

Today, for the first time in a long time, we have a President who understands that service economies are vulnerable economies. Building things is also important and it’s not possible to leave that productivity component off the table and maintain a reliable standard of living. Witness success stories in Germany, China, Japan, and Korea. Each prioritizes services but have also sought smarter and better ways to build the things people use.

While the Democratic Party has been busy building welfare rolls and serving special interest voter groups, the countries noted above have wisely recognized that no handout can compete with the best social service – a good job. Blue-collar jobs can be really good jobs.

In the nineties, when America rolled over on our manufacturing power rather than upgrade, build smarter and seek to compete where we could and should, we put a lot of people out of a job. That was a form of betrayal that many working people and communities have not forgotten.

Until Donald Trump starting talking to these people, the Republican Party had no compelling voice for the working voter. We were blamed as much as the Democrats for the distressed status of those who historically made their living laying their hands on the world.

The President’s view on unfair trade agreements; closed markets for our goods by countries insisting on open markets for theirs; porous borders overrun with unskilled laborers; and a much-ignored sophisticated form of economic warfare by countries like China and Germany, resonates with blue-collar workers.

There is a feeling among many middle-class Americans that our leadership has spent so much time, resources and money securing the safety and interests of our economic partners that we have neglected our own.

We agree and value President Trump’s willingness to challenge this folly.

The fact is most Americans don’t want America to be like Europe. We like the traditional American values of independence, hard work, and big people over big government. We want our politicians to stand for something we can count on. We get the insanity of no borders. We recognize a rigged deal when we experience it. We understand that there is such a thing as normal and that common sense makes the most sense for most situations.

The migration away from the Democratic Party keys mostly to what our side is doing right. What their side is doing wrong counts too. The left is fast becoming little more than a loud cloud of special interest groups self-licensed to run over everyone who gets in their way. Working people recognizing bullying – even when it’s given a fake title of ‘social justice.’

A wise man was once asked, “What’s the most important thing to people?” “To matter,” he answered, “We all need to matter.” Blue-collar people like to matter by working. Brand-X seems to believe that being angry, negative, critical and radical are better ways. Working people know better and are voting with their feet by moving to the right side.

There are lot of us who also understand the decades long political betrayal of America’s traditional Success Equation – Liberty + Opportunity + Responsibility = Prosperity.

People who carry their own weight and feed themselves and their families with their own hand – like most middle-class blue-collar workers strive to do – understand you can’t leave out ingredients and produce the same outcome.

Our opposition’s relentless promise of something for nothing makes that over-played pretense and it’s a working voter turn-off.

In today’s America we are faced with a clear choice between a party of tradition, realism and normality and increasingly angry cluster of anarchists seeking to replace an imperfect something with nothing.

People with more positive and realistic views – including working people – are wising up to the fact that America is not immune from self-destruction. The growing motivations of Americans moving away from the extremism of the left and toward Republicanism can be reduced to one thing – rejecting the message it’s necessary to hack off an arm to cure a rash…

RNC comes to town and makes BCGOP better!

Many thanks to Republican volunteer Tiph Worley for this good feedback from this Saturday’s RNC Training. There’s some good stuff in her great summary!

The July 21st Republican National Committee NC Campaign Training session under Robert Andrews’s great touch was a big success with most all local and state candidates participating.  The Buncombe County Republican Women’s Club – under the leadership of Lisa Baldwin – deserves kudos for bringing this to us so beautifully. Special credit is due Dorothea Alderfer who pulled off the organizational details without a hitch!

This new training series provided by the RNC grew out of the 2012 election year autopsy. As a result, the central Republican field organization staff is changing its relation to volunteer resources from  STAFF centric leadership to VOLUNTEER focused through DELEGATION.

The three models of leadership discussed were –

1.   ONE PERSON IS IN CHARGE and everybody takes direction from that central person.   Obviously inefficient.

2.   NOBODY IN PARTICULAR IS REALLY IS IN CHARGE and everyone does their own thing.   Obviously nonproductive.

3.   ONE PERSON IS IN CHARGE and tasks and responsibilities are DELEGATED.    Our goal.  (sound familiar? (;  )

VOLUNTEERS are those who can provide 1 – 3 hours of work per week on average, phone banks, door hangers etc.

CTM, Core Team Members are local people who can provide 3 – 5 hours work per week.   These are people in the communtiy such as pastors and locally active folks or leaders.

NTL, Neighborhood Leaders are local officers such as precinct captains providing about 10 hours+ per week of work.

FO, Field Organizers can be anyone but presumably those associated or in touch with the state/national Republican staff.  These are the central staffers.

The following are notes on how we go about building this delegated model to actually work:

How the neighborhood teams are built:

PHASE 1   potential

PHASE 2   early couple of meetings

PHASE  3  team structure formed, people have assigned roles

PHASE  4  everyone knows what they are doing

PHASE  5  transformation – “big” team, may even split into a second team.

Build 1 to 1 relationships first

1.   Start with asking “why”. Why am I really a Republican?  Why am I doing this?

2.    Use personal stories.  These have emotional appeal, build connection, create a platform for expansion and trust.

Why volunteers leave  (how to address)

1.  not having fun        (take pictures, have more fun, keep the office clean)

2.   not being challenged

3.   not feeling valued         (find _something_ for everyone to do, i.e. clean the office)

4.   not being thanked           (anyone who visits the office gets a thank you note)

Phrases to avoid    vs    Phrases to use

1.   do you have time?       vs     can I count on you?

2.    if you are not too busy?     vs      I would love for you to participate

3.    would you be interested?      vs     I have an opportunity for you

Tools and Tactics

1.    door hangers    –   effective/ time consuming.    Voters are 6% more likely to vote after receiving a door hanger

2.    phone   –    easier, faster/ less effective, expensive.    Phone numbers are harder to track.

3.   door presentations/canvassing  – personal, effective/time consuming, weather&safety issues.

Best times for canvassing:     M-F 4-7pm for most adult residences,  early afternoon for senior living areas.    Saturdays 10am to 1pm.     Sunday  3-6pm.      Estimate 3 hours for 60 doors in a reasonably dense neighborhood.

The RNC prediction for national turnout in 2016 was 135,824,656.    It was actually 136,588,897.

The RNC prediction for Michican in 2016 was 4,806,396.    It was actually 4,799,450 (.1%)

Again, many thanks to Tiph, the BCRWC, the RNC and all the good folks who attended the session. As you can see, we are on the right track with a lot of what we are already doing and see plenty of space and opportunity for growth and improvement in what we need to do!

Well behaved men don’t make history either…

From the chair – You may remember the much-favored rallying cry for the feminist women’s movement, “Well behaved women seldom make history.” It’s true. May we suggest it’s also true of men?

Take President Trump. He just behaved badly in Helsinki.

With the eyes of the world on him and Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin, our Republican President let his chutzpah get ahead of his brain and he made several foolish statements.

Note we said his statements were foolish – that’s as in non-productive. That’s not necessarily the same thing as wrong.

Our President’s predecessor prided himself on shining imagery and oratory. He spent 8 years polishing those credentials.

Donald Trump’s imagery grade would not make his mom proud. His successes and commitment to courageously lead versus safely dog-paddle merit an A+.

When your primary mission is maintaining your image, risk factors are limited. When your mission is to lead, mistakes are inevitable. Sometimes they will also be foolish.

As measured by the number of females we support in leadership roles, conservatives aren’t sexist. We get it that neither well-behaved women nor men make history – and that swamps are muddy places less vulnerable to charm than conviction.

Can you name one constructive leadership achievement by President Trump’s predecessor? ObamaCare – for gazillion obvious reasons – doesn’t count. Take your time. (;

Now think about what this President has accomplished in his first year in office. Allow us to help-

President Trump misspoke himself in Helsinki. He made a foolish statement and has since admitted so – it’s clear that Russian made an attempt to interfere in America’s election.

But there are a few things that are not so clear. Why did Robert Mueller who, as FBI chief, sat for five years on the indictment of Russian uranium executives to avoid embarrassing Obama and Hillary Clinton, chose to indict Russian military hackers on the eve of President Trump’s trip to Helsinki?

When the President suggested he did not trust our intelligence agencies, why was he so roundly vilified when it has been repeatedly demonstrated that former Obama CIA chief John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former FBI chief James Comey have in word and deed a relentless animosity toward the President?

Why is President Trump being criticized for going to Helsinki to do precisely what his two predecessors attempted to do – except he was more successful? A big example – calling out Germany for relying on us for protection from Russia while funding Russia with a pipeline deal.

Why is our President’s attempt to stop knee-jerk hostility toward Russia and create dialog being confused with surrender to Putin’s charm and chrism? Calling out chronic NATO under-funding by our allies and chastising Germany’s crazy pipeline inconsistency is hardly a Putin win-win.

The fact is we have a President who leads boldly. He speaks from the cuff and not always with a careful attention to detail, facts or image appeal. Stand those occasional faux pas up against his courageous efforts to lead out of facts and truth, and it is very clear which matters most and why the usual suspects are trying so hard to discredit him.

Do we wish our President would be a little more careful with his words – yes – but not if it will mean he becomes like the parade of double talking manipulators who characterize the lion’s share of our leadership pool.

A final point. It’s been demonstrated that Russia has attempted to interfere with our elections and no one has yet been held accountable. It’s also been demonstrated that our liberal mainstream media monopolists, intelligence services, and entrenched government bureaucrats have attempted to interfere with our elections and no one has yet been held accountable.

Which one do you think matters most – Russian shenanigans on Facebook – or the traitors within our own borders…

You’re going to love this quick video on NC’s Justice race!

It appears we have one authentic candidate for this seat. They’re all smiling – but which one is real? This video makes that truth perfectly clear.  Hint – skip the pin stripes for the robe…

Brand-X double-standards – Vegas style…

Many thanks to Republican volunteer George Humphries for passing this great article!

This article appeared in the Las Vegas Review Journal, written by Wayne Allyn Root, who explains the importance of walls, the 2nd amendment and voter ID in a very understandable way….

Please ignore the advertising slogan “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”  It’s not true.  Las Vegas is the crossroads of America. What happens here is happening everywhere. And I’ve uncovered the biggest liberal scam in America going on right here in Vegas.

It revolves around my home community in Henderson.  I live in Anthem Country Club.

There are about 1500 beautiful homes behind the gates at Anthem. What’s the appeal of Anthem Country Club? It’s got a big beautiful wall around it.  And thick iron gates in front, protected by armed guards.

There is virtually no crime inside walled, gated, armed Anthem. I’ve lived here for almost 17 years.  My kids grew up here.
They played outside every day from morning till night and I never worried for one moment. Because of the wall, the gates and the armed guards, my kids were as safe as if they lived in “Mayberry R.F.D.”  Life is good behind the gates of Anthem.
In the rest of Las Vegas … not so much,  In the rest of Vegas … lots of crime and fear.

This proves walls, gates and armed guards are good if you want your family to be safe. But wait.  Anthem recently added a new feature to keep our residents safe. Drivers entering our gates must show a government-issued photo ID.  Anyone entering our community — guests, gardeners, maids, nannies, pool cleaners, handymen, plumbers, electricians, delivery personnel — must provide state or federal government issued photo ID or they will be denied entry. Every single one of them.

There are many lessons we can learn from studying Anthem.  If you want your family and children to be safe, build a wall
Preferably a wall that is also surrounded by armed guards.  The Vatican understands this lesson. Mexico understands — it has a wall on it’s southern border.  Many rich Liberals in America who live in gated communities — or gated private estates or buildings with doormen — understand this lesson, too.

They just don’t want you to have a wall. They think their children are more important than yours. They clearly think you are stupid, as they argue walls and guns are not necessary. Liberal Democrats are hypocrites in this and many other ways .
Guess who lives inside the walls of Anthem Country Club?  Harry Reid.  You know, former U.S. Senator and majority leader in the Senate.

The former water carrier for President Obama, who spent his entire Senate career fighting viciously against a wall.
Harry argued walls were terrible and unnecessary.  Harry could have retired anywhere in Vegas — or anywhere in America, for that matter.

But he chose to live behind the walls — and gates — and armed guards of Anthem Country Club.

Harry is my neighbor.  Welcome to the neighborhood.  But, Harry, don’t Liberals hate walls and gates and armed guards and photo ID? Don’t Liberals call those racist?  Yet here sits Harry Reid and the entire Reid clan, interesting!

The argument against voter ID is a scam.

How do all those gardeners and maids and pool cleaners and handymen drive through the gates of Anthem every day?
The answer: They already have government-issued photo IDs. So I guess it’s a lie when Liberal politicians claim minorities don’t have photo IDs, or they’re too difficult for them to get or it’s “ racist” to ask them for it. I guess they all already have it.  I guess they are thrilled to show it to earn a paycheck. Just not to vote.  That would be “racist.”

I guess we just proved the liberal argument is a scam. Voter ID is the easiest and simplest request in the world. Heck, they have it in Mexico. You can’t vote in Mexico without a government issued ID card- complete with photo and bio-metric thumbprint.

Voter ID is the simplest request in the world – if you really wanted to stop “foreign interference” in US elections. But Voter ID is a big issue for Democrats because they want and need election fraud. They can’t win without it.  They want their voters to vote multiple times, with no questions asked. They want illegals to be able to vote by the millions for Democrats. Asking for government-issued ID and checking for legal citizenship would ruin all that.

Folks, we’re being scammed.  Anthem Country Club is the proof. We need a wall.  And we need Voter ID. Everyone knows it – even Harry Reid and his liberal friends. All the proof we need of this scam is right here in the suburbs of Las Vegas.

What happens here is happening everywhere!!!

I reject the 2nd Amendment, border walls, vote ID and police – because I’m safe. How about you?

People of the Lie…

From the chair – It’s been thirty-years or so since Christian psychiatrist Scott Peck (of The Road Less Traveled fame) published his startling treatise, People of the Lie.

Watching Peter Strzok’s congressional testimony yesterday was a stark reminder of how right Dr. Peck was.

About what? Well, it was his suggestion that the America of that time was busy building a generation of liars in business, government, industry, finance, religion and education that would one day take the heart out of our country. We are there.

Watching Agent Strzok was a front-row seat to the perfection of a “person of the lie.” His arrogance; anger; assumed victim status, denial, evasion, displacement and other deception tools were dramatically on display for all to see.

Yes, we all have moments of insincerity – that doesn’t make you a “person of the lie” unless you surrender to that temptation. We are witnesses to a time in our culture where an amazing number of people are doing just that.

Why is this important? Because Dr. Peck was unfortunately right – people of the lie have become so common that everyday people are beginning to believe that Strzok-like behavior is normal.

It’s not – and the only way to counter “People of the Lie” influence is to make sure you and I don’t join them.

“The more honest one is, the easier it is to continue being honest,

just as the more lies one has told, the more necessary it is to lie again.” ~ Scott Peck

Buncombe Republican Volunteers Stepping Up!

From the chair –The Buncombe Republican Party is working hard to work together. More and more of us are getting the reality that in a dark local and national political climate, unity is crucial.

We also get that unity doesn’t require uniformity. Free, independent, unique and even eccentric spirits are welcome in the BCGOP – but we need everyone to bring their best. Best means those skills, efforts and contributions that help our local party be effective and productive. Some of those skills sets take work – forgiveness, patience, maturity, cooperation, creativity and compassion are not usually natural talents. These are skills, and like all skills, require practice.

This week I received an note from our secretary – Linda Humphries – highlighting one of her days and observations of Republican volunteers practicing their best. Their evident effort, example and contribution are worth noting and sharing – with gratitude-

Chairman Mumpower,

I just wanted to let you know I had the pleasure of dropping by Team 5 – South Asheville’s District Meeting this evening. The meeting was held at Scott Skjoldager’s home, brownies included!

The following were in attendance:  Ken Hawkins- Team 5 Director; Scott Skjoldager- 18.2 Precinct Chair; Pat Hair- 29.2 Precinct Chair; Betty Budd- 54.2 Precinct Chair; Laura McCue- 55.1 Precinct Chair; Laura Bowen- 57.1 Precinct Chair; Aaron Ollis- South end Republican Volunteer; Janet Burhoe-Jones- Volunteer for House Candidate Marilyn Brown

Team Director, Ken Hawkins has been communicating with his Precinct Chairs regarding their recommendations for Party Officials in their Precincts. All of the Precinct Chairs in attendance had completed their recommendations for election Officials. They are signed and filed.

After collecting the forms, I had the pleasure of listening to these wonderful, energetic, actively involved Republicans plan their “Candidate Meet & Greet” scheduled for September 1 at Lake Julian. This kind of grassroots effort is getting us where we need to be!

The North End – Team 7 had their District meeting a couple of weeks ago and they too have almost completed their Election Official Recommendations. They have scheduled their “Candidate Meet & Greet” for August 15th At Lake Louise. Good folks, working hard.

I also had the pleasure of meeting with Bob Penland today. As acting Team Director of Team 9 – Hominy Valley, he was so willing and knowledgeable in regards to the need to get election official’s working inside the polls on election day. He and his team are planning their “Candidate Meet & Greet” for August 25th on the West End at the Buncombe County Sports Park. Bob will be working with his Precinct folks to get election official recommendations in place within the next week.

Gloria Michael, Team Director of Team 6 – East Buncombe and I also met today. She and her Precinct Chairs are busy working on their recommendations for Election Officials and their “Candidate Meet & Greet” scheduled for September 29th at Lake Tomahawk in Blk. Mtn.

I will continue to collect and file these all important Election Official Recommendation forms for your signature. A Great Day with Great Republicans!

We have our opposition – it’s not us. We are increasingly united in understanding the Republican Party is the only organized political movement capable of challenging, impairing and halting the excesses of Brand-X. This note offered a good example of Buncombe Republicans pulling together toward that good end. Impressive!

SCOTUS reaction exposes the left…

The game is to have them all running about with fire extinguishers when there is a flood,

and all crowding to that side of the boat which is already nearly gunwale under.”

― C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

From the chair – In the movie The Devil’s Advocate the parade of characters working for the bad guy (Al Pacino) are generally positive, attractive and friendly. The only time you see their darker side is when they (1) let down their guard (2) occasionally get afraid or (3) every time they get angry. In the coming weeks you and I are going to see a lot of angry faces.

The President’s SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh is a next to ideal choice. He’s a gentleman of faith, family and community. He’s sharp as a tack and his legal pedigree checks more boxes than than a long-form census survey. He’s personable, articulate, deliberate and value driven. Most importantly of all – for conservative thinkers – he’s a rule of law; don’t legislate from the bench; and do uphold the Constitution kind of guy. He has his detractors on the right – but not many and not about much.

Nonetheless, his nomination has produced a Stage 3 reaction in the left – and the faces we’re seeing are not pretty.

That the liberal-progressive-socialist political bloc would react negatively to the President’s choice comes as no surprise. In one year, Donald Trump’s amazingly cogent conservatism has dumped a monsoon of rain on the left’s party. A potentially decades long 5-4 conservative majority on the Supreme Court has the aggravating potential to turn the left’s disappointment clouds into a flood of despair. That said – like C.S. Lewis’s Satanic disciples in the Screwtape Letters – the boys and girls on the left are not going down easy.

Remember the Women’s March? Yes, the one put together by community organizers who thought profanity, anger and knitted pink vagina hats would be solid paths to social equality. These ladies were so upset about the pending SCOTUS decision they drafted a press release before the appointment was made. Someone leaked it and the funny part was the xxxxxx in the blanks where the nominees name was to be placed. It turns out the Women’s March organizers were planning to say the same thing no matter who the nominee turned out to be.

The echoes coming from Brand-X have been catastrophic in their predictive emphasis. That, too, comes as no surprise. This tactic comes right out of the left’s not-so-secret win-at-any-cost handbook. Not seen one? Well here’s a quick refresher on their top-ten “best practice” list for undoing America’s success equation –

1) Attack the conservative opposition’s person-hood when you can’t legitimately attack their ideas.

2) Give your agenda a cute name and the opposition’s thinking a bad one. Example – Gay Friendly vs. Homophobic.

3) Never count beyond two – our approach is good and theirs is bad. There is no third option or middle ground.

4) Remember that our good intentions justifies any means – including bad ones.

5) Never attack your own – even when they do bad. Always attack conservatives – even when they do good.

6) The mission is to encourage people to feel and react – not to think – thinking is not conducive to loyalty.

7) The most important emotion to feed is anger. Anger is addictive. Angry people thus become liberal acolytes.

8) The second most important emotion is fear. Fear is also addictive. We sell liberalism as the antidote.

9) Relentlessly discourage responsibility. Accountability breeds independence. We seek conformity.

10) The promise of something for nothing is our path to power – share that promise promiscuously.

Consider cutting out this list and placing a copy by your recliner. When you’re watching TV, browsing Facebook or reading the paper – have fun picking out which strategy Brand-X talking heads are using to denigrate the nominee. Then remember there’s a decided difference in decibels and debate; drama and discussion; and dogma and dedication.

The left is going to crank up the noise for much the same reason the home team crowd yells to drown out the opposition’s quarterback calls. It might work occasionally – but it will never defeat competency.

Our President has made a great call. Now it’s up to Mitch McConnell to pull it off. Isn’t that an interesting development.

Conservatives should count their blessings on that last little detail. Mitch McConnell achieved a courageous feat in postponing a vote on a new SCOTUS appointee until Obama left office. That one action – resulting in the appointment of Justice Gorsuch – secured a conservative footprint that will have profound impacts. Added to that accomplishment is another impressive stat. Senator McConnell is 21 for 21 in confirming President Trump’s federal appeals court nominees. No matter one’s personal reaction to this gentleman, in terms of securing the SCOTUS nominee, we have the right guy in the right place at the right time.

You may have heard this old attorney joke – “If the facts are on your side, pound on the facts. If the facts aren’t on your side, pound on the table.” The liberal-progressive-socialist movement (our Brand-X opposition) has added “make mean faces” to pounding on their table.

As things progress for our Republican team – Trump – McConnell – Kavanaugh – listen less to the words coming from the left than the looks on their faces. Hatred is rarely attached to good things.

The SCOTUS tug-of-war has begun – it’s not going to be pretty. Aren’t you glad you’re on the right side?

“…The “democratic spirit”… [or the campaign to make everyone the same] leads to a nation without great men,

a nation mainly of sub-literates, full of the cocksureness which flattery breeds on ignorance,

and quick to snarl or whimper at the first hint of criticism.”

A blessed 4th wish from Buncombe’s 45,000 Republicans!

From the chair – On behalf of the Buncombe County Republican Party, fellow conservatives and our partners in good governance, we extend our hearty wishes for a blessed, intimate and celebratory Independence Day. Let us this day declare and embrace our individual and collective mandate – TO PRESERVE OUR FOREFATHER’S DREAM AND OUR INHERITANCE AS A VISION OF HOPE FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW. Let us each privately commit to our commanding course – “America is a unique beacon of light in a dark world – well worth the challenge and sacrifice necessary to her preservation.”
